Galerie Leu is a second-generation gallery, founded in 1981 by the Swedish-German couple Kerstin Wiklund and Holger Leu. Established in Hamburg and relocated to Munich in 1997, the gallery has developed a program that bridges European post-war movements with contemporary artistic positions.
From its inception, the gallery maintained a strong engagement with Scandinavian artists, reflecting its origins and shaping a lasting dialogue between Northern European sensibilities and broader international developments. Today, Galerie Leu places particular emphasis on artists associated with Group ZERO and the Milan-based Group Azimuth, as well as on Concrete Art, Minimalism, Pop Art, New European Painting, and selected contemporary practices.
John Mathias Leu joined the gallery in 2006 after completing his studies in philosophy and assumed its direction in 2014. Under his leadership, the gallery has further refined its program while maintaining a long-term and considered approach to working with artists, collectors, and institutions.
Since November 2021, the gallery has been residing in a historic building in the heart of Munich’s museum district, situated directly opposite the Museum Brandhorst and the Pinakothek der Moderne. Galerie Leu is active in both the primary and secondary markets.
